Critical answer to "Art goes Heiligendamm"

HOLY DAMN IT: 50 000 posters against G8

(for German please scroll down)

www.holy-damn-it.org

Up to now, the public representation and perception of the project "Art
goes Heiligendamm" has been articulated in all media reports under the
same headlines "De-escalating art for the G8 summit " or "Art project
wants to de-escalate at the G-8 summit". The German "Spiegel" magazine
published online: "With 'Art goes Heiligendamm,' the participating
artists want to mediate between politics and the critics of
globalization." Adrienne Goehler, initiator of the project and former
Berlin senator of culture, presented the project with the following
words: "We want to contribute to de-escalation on site. Thus, we want to
break with the logic of participants and opponents of the summit and
create a discursive space of experience beyond good and evil."
In press release #1 Goehler said: "Art goes Heiligendamm" wants to
achieve that in the future every G8 and WTO summit includes
intercultural communication, aesthetic experience and a social space for
reflection on the necessary themes of globalization which are in need of
cultural translation."

We clearly oppose this instrumentalization of artistic works on the
basis of a mediating legitimization of G8 politics. At the same time we
are against the fact that the term "de-escalation" is attributed to
functionalize art (as the project Art goes Heiligendamm suggests). The
latter is even more relevant with regard to the recent escalation of
police raids against the G-8 protest movements throughout Germany, the
massive intimidation and defamation campaigns through police forces as
well as the announcement of the authorities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to
prohibit the rally to Heiligendamm on June 8.
It is self-evident for the ten artists and artist collectives
participating in the international art project "HOLY DAMN IT" to
formulate an artistic intervention against the politics of G8 in the
frame of the international protest and resistance movements (for further
information see www.holy-damn-it.org).
Out of the abovementioned reasons we have decided to turn down the
invitation to be presented in a special issue of the TAZ newspaper and
to exhibit under the label "Art Goes Heiligendamm" in Rostock.
Moreover, we consider it necessary to contribute to a discourse about
the motifs of artistic interventions in current social processes and
their medial perception. We want to continue this discussion with our
artist colleagues who have hitherto been working in the frame of "Art
goes Heiligendamm," especially since we appreciate their work and do not
think that they see their art as "mediating" or "de-escalating."
In such debates, artists should know where, for whom and under which
conditions they present their works.
"Art goes Heiligendamm is 'imaginative, creative and visionary' and
lives up to the practical slogan 'Germany - Land of Ideas'," as stated
in press release #1.
We do not want to contribute to such an identity-forming measure.

HOLY DAMN IT
50 000 Posters against G8
On the Urgent Need for Radical Answers

The art project HOLY DAMN IT has to be seen as an artistic intervention
in the process of a political debate about social alternatives in the
international protest and resistance movements against the G-8 summit in
Heiligendamm near Rostock in 2007.

Ten international artists and artist collectives from four continents
have created one poster each - further informations www.holy-damn-it.org:

Déberlinisation (Senegal) Markus Dorfmüller (D)
Petra Gerschner (D) Marina Grzinic (Slowenien)
Ibrahim Mozain/Artists Without Walls (Israel/Palästina)
Oliver Ressler (A) Walter Seidl (A) Allan Sekula (USA)

The artistic contributions deal with the hegemonic conditions and
current issues about social movements against capitalist globalization:
privatization, exploitation of human beings and resources, war, torture,
escalating military mobilization from within as well as to the outside
as a permanent state of exception, sexist violence and patriarchal as
well as racist models of dominance. Moreover, the project deals with the
power of global image (re-)production within capitalism and the
development of ideas about of an emancipative and solidarity-oriented
culture and society.

Each poster of the ten artists and artist groups was printed 5.000 times
in A 2 format, 4-c, and distributed: The posters will be handed out for
free to various groups mobilizing against the summit.

HOLY DAMN IT can also be seen as the start for a long-term project of
communication and exchange of ideas between artistic production and
intervention as well as between the various perspectives on current
views of the world.

Posters are not restricted to special sites of presentation. They can
appear in various places, counter social mainstream and use public space
as a place for action and reflection. On the website of the art project
there are all motifs of the poster series with short information on the
project, the participating artists, background information on the
mobilization process. We would be happy if many people could link their
websites of anti G-8 mobilization and art-spaces to our art project
www.holy-damn-it.org.

From mid-April 2007, there will be presentations of the project in
various cities, mostly in art institutions which operate strongly
in-between art and politics. There, the posters will be available to be
taken home for free. For massive spreading of the posters, they can also
be ordered at info@holy-damn-it.org

Moreover, there will be a limited edition of 200 copies (of all 10
posters) signed by the artists, which can be sold. The money should be
donated to victims who were arbitrarily violated by the police during
summit protests.

Öffentliche Stellungnahme vom 21. Mai 2007

Das internationale Kunstprojekt "HOLY DAMN IT: 50 000 Plakate gegen G8 -

So heißt

beteiligen.

HOLY DAMN IT
50 000 Plakate gegen G 8

bankleer (D) open circle (Indien) Mansour Ciss/Laboratoire
Déberlinisation (Senegal) Markus Dorfmüller (D)
Petra Gerschner (D) Marina Grzinic (Slowenien)
Ibrahim Mozain/Artists Without Walls (Israel/Palästina)
Oliver Ressler (A) Walter Seidl (A) Allan Sekula (USA)

Kunstprojekt www.holy-damn-it.org einrichten.

In vielen Städten finden ab Mitte April 2007 Ausstellungen,
info@holy-damn-it.org
